Remote Learning

Remote Learning
at St John’s Catholic Infant School

Following recent government advice, we have reviewed and adapted our Remote Home Learning plan to bring it in line with legal requirements. The information below for children and parents/carers sets out the school’s provision for the remote and home education that we will provide when children test positive for CV19.

Statutory Obligations and Expectations

Where possible schools should provide remote education to allow pupils to keep pace with their education when in-person attendance is either not possible or contrary to government guidance. Schools should therefore continue to be prepared to implement high-quality remote education so that any pupil who is well enough to learn from home, but unable to attend school in person, can continue to do so

As guidance has changed, we have updated our Policy for Remote Education, setting out the strategies that will underpin our best endeavours to offer all children support during their isolation period. Teachers and all staff will do all that they reasonably can, within their available resources, to ensure that children can learn successfully at home.

This information for parents is a summary of the provision that the school is making for remote learning. Where parents need more detailed information or if they would like to discuss remote learning with the school, they are encouraged to contact Mrs Bulmer or Miss Sharkey using the school’s usual procedures.

 Remote education for self-isolating pupils

  • Where individual children need to self-isolate, but the majority of their peer group remains in school and they are well enough to complete learning, remote education support will be provided for them.

  • On the first day of isolation, you will be sent a Parent Mail, with a link to Oak National Academy lessons and other useful resources that can be used.

Teaching and Learning:

  • We will make our best endeavors to ensure that children are provided with opportunities for teaching and learning that meet the DfE recommendations of 3 hours per day for KS1

  • The recommendations for pupils in Preschool and Foundation 2, who are below statutory school age may vary from those in KS1

  • The school will make its best endeavours to use a wide range of strategies for teaching and learning. These strategies will be designed to be appropriate for children’s ages, abilities and aptitudes and may include all or a combination of:

    - teaching (online lessons), eg Oak National Academy Lessons

    - recommended, appropriate safe websites

    - home learning ideas/activities

  • Teachers will respond to work sent through every day via their designated class email

  • Miss Sharkey will also follow up with individual telephone calls any parents/children they are concerned or worried about or have not heard from

Accessing remote education

  • All classes have their own class email account which has been given out to parents, to support feedback and communication

  • Parents will be informed of the way in which the platform can be accessed and offered appropriate support to access the platform if they need it

  • The internet will be used safely by the school to maintain contact with children and parents to provide support for teaching and learning

  • The school policies for safeguarding, E-safety and data protection will be applied at all times

  • The school will follow the DfE guidelines and make appropriate provisions for the continuing safeguarding, care and support of all children when they are using remote education, especially those who are vulnerable

  • The school will continue to be available to offer help and advice to parents who request support with the provision of learning at home

Contingency Planning

During a Local or National lockdown, with remote education for most pupils being the default, we will be teach the same curriculum remotely as we do to those children still attending in school. All children will be following the prepared timetable which will be a mix of online and practical lessons and activities matched to the curriculum expectations for this time of year and the weekly timetable will be sent to all parents each Friday. All children learning at home will have the opportunity for two face-to-face contacts (morning and afternoon) which will include talking through the day’s work, daily prayers, afternoon storytime and sharing work completed during the day. Teachers will respond to work sent through every day via their designated class email. Teachers will also follow up with individual telephone calls any parents/children they are concerned or worried about or have not heard from.

With regards to the remote learning, we know how challenging this can be and do not expect you to be able to work miracles any more than we can. Do what you can with home learning, do your best, encourage the children to do their best and do not cause yourself or your children stress about it.

Parent Comments

  • “I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone at St John’s for the past 7 weeks of lockdown learning. From the admin and communication to the highly organised delivery of lessons both remotely and in school as part of emergency provision, St John’s has been excellent. Our daughter can be a little unsure at times, however she has loved coming to school as part of emergency provision and learning at home on a Tuesday. This is entirely due to the caring teachers and support staff who have been working so hard” (F2)

  • ‘I would like to thank you all for your hard work to keep working with the children, keeping them busy and learning during this difficult time. The children have been doing a mixture of school time and remote learning but when at home they love the daily calls with their teacher and having the opportunity to interact with them and their friends! Seeing their teacher and hearing how pleased they are with the work they are doing really keeps them motivated so thank you’ (F2)

  • “Thank you so much again - for EVERYTHING you are doing & all your marvellous staff. We feel so incredibly lucky to have our children in such a marvellous school, with such a warm, loving & caring ethos. You really do make us all feel like we are part of the schools family” (F2 & Y2)
